Dear Friends,
This past May, I traveled back to the Nuba Mts. of Sudan to facilitate another large shipment of medical supplies to the Secretary of Health, Tutu Turkash. I had just learned that our 11-ton shipment was flown to Yida, South Sudan, the refugee camp just across the border.
From there, these supplies will be transported by high-clearance, 4-wheel drive trucks called “Unimogs” which navigate the muddy paths through the bush that serve as roads.
I also took in a few smaller items that are hard for Dr. Catena at Mother of Mercy Hospital to obtain through his usual supply channels such as bone drills for plating fractures. I also included some special treats like my mother’s chocolate chip cookies.
I visited several clinics and hospitals that these medications supply and observed the conditions that the medications are stored. I also visited the wholesale pharmacy, CMS, in Juba, S Sudan where we purchased our medicines and spent time discussing the situation with the Secretary of Health, the Governor and his staff, and military leaders in the area. My goal is always to better understand and respond to the needs of the Nuba people.
The shipment that just arrived in Nuba this week will be the third shipment so far in 2023 and, if we have the funding, Doctors to the World will be placing another large order this August of approximately $100,000 for October or November delivery.
The civil war in the north of Sudan is now in its fourth month; displacing thousands of people from their homes. Many who traveled north to seek shelter when the Nuba Mountains were bombed just a few years ago, are now being forced to return to escape the fighting in Sudan.
Doctors to the World is stocking up as many medical supplies as possible to be able to respond to this increased need in an area. Update, November 2023: At the bottom of this letter, you’ll see some stats we pulled in to show the kind of results we’re having for the people of the Nuba Mountains.
