Dear Friends,
It is now rainy season in the Nuba Mts, and malaria cases are increasing. We continue to focus on antimalarials, antibiotics and IV fluids to battle Malaria, Pneumonia and Diarrhea, the three main causes of death in children under five. Doctors to the World has been able to send two cargo planes filled with medical supplies so far in 2021. These two shipments included enough medication to treat over 100,000 people for malaria. We plan to send two more cargo planes of supplies before the end of the year.
As we all know, the Coronavirus Pandemic continues to disrupt supply chains around the world causing delays and increasing costs. By partnering with Sudan Relief Fund and Samaritan’s Purse to cover costs of transportation and logistics, the funds of Doctors to the World are committed directly to the medical supplies.
The new coalition government in The Sudan is making progress, but the coronavirus and economic collapse is making this all even more difficult. The political leadership of the Nuba people is actively negotiating a peace agreement, but Sudan has still not lifted the blockade of humanitarian aid which forces us to smuggle supplies through South Sudan for the indefinite future.
If you or your friends haven’t seen this yet there is an excellent film documentary, The Heart of Nuba, about Dr. Tom Catena and the situation in the Nuba Mountains. Luckily, there is no longer active bombing of the hospital, but this film is still very educational, and I think inspiring as it shows the commitment of Dr. Tom and the hospital staff to stay and take care of the Nuba people. Just Google “Heart of Nuba” and you’ll find links to the movie.
On behalf of the people we serve, thank you for your support and the trust you have placed in Doctors to the World to make a positive impact on the lives of those most in need. 100% of your contributions still go directly to those in need because all staff pay all our own expenses and administrative overhead is donated by our Board of Directors. You can make a donation here.
Sincerely,
C. Louis “doc pj” Perrinjaquet, MD, MPH
